K24A MRS: Ever’s insatiable quest to be happy

If you’re a regular on our blog, or if you have the pleasure of knowing Ever personally, you’ll recognize a fundamental truth about him: satisfaction is a fleeting concept. While owning an NSX, MR-S, R1, and a 4Runner for daily drives would leave most of us in automobile nirvana, Ever operates on a different wavelength. Indeed, his garage houses the aforementioned auto’s, yet contentment eludes him—or rather, conventional contentment.

This is not a critique—far from it. We’re not here to attack Ever’s relentless pursuit of more. On the contrary, Ever treasures his mechanical entourage and does not for a second take his blessings for granted. But where others see a finish line, Ever sees a starting point. His insatiable yearning for the new or better is a testament to a mind that is perennially in overdrive.

Consider the undeniable surge of exhilaration that accompanies the purchase of a new car accessory or the latest tweak to your vehicle. That sensation is extraordinary, toeing the line between hobby and obsession. It’s an endorphin rush, a neurological jackpot that equates to sheer joy—a joy that Ever knows all too well. It is this chase, this unstoppable quest for euphoria, that defines Ever’s ethos. It’s not merely a want; it’s an essence, a force that propels him to always dream bigger, and in that, we recognize a relentless, unapologetic passion for happiness.

Ever abstains from drinking, drugs, partying, clubbing, or any other similar activities. His joy is derived from purchasing car parts and engaging in the restoration of vehicles. Rather than hastily judging him for his collection of automotive treasures and uttering “Must Be Nice,” consider the financial freedom you’d enjoy if your life revolved around your profession, you adhered to eating within a strict eight-hour window, and abstained from vacations. The absence of these expenditures could potentially allow you to indulge in numerous hobbies of your own.

While there is a common belief that material possessions cannot buy happiness, what truly matters is the sense of contentment they bring. Whether through drugs, alcohol, spending extravagantly, or even riskier pursuits—these are avenues some people take in search of joy. Although often perceived as a quest for happiness, these choices are typically self-destructive and potentially trap individuals in a relentless cycle of depression and an insatiable desire for fulfillment.

Certainly, this is the driving force behind our actions—the pursuit of happiness. We engage in various activities that bring us joy, even if it’s momentary. The cycle of elation followed by a downturn is all too familiar, yet we wholeheartedly embrace it. In my case, investing in cars and their accessories may seem unwise to some, and though I’m aware of the responsibilities I’m sidestepping, the thrill that comes with each new purchase is undeniably addictive. It’s about chasing that exhilarating feeling, and therein lies the satisfaction.

As COVID-19 suspended track events over the past three months, we, the dedicated “track enthusiasts,” have channeled our passion into creating ultimate “COVID builds.” The thrill of acquiring new car parts and embarking on these projects has become a life-affirming pursuit, compensating for our time away from the track. What began as a yearning for the adrenaline rush of the race has transformed into a period of productivity and personal growth, keeping our spirits high and our love for the sport burning strong.

My circle of friends and I are die-hard enthusiasts when it comes to cars and anything that’s Motorsport-related. We live and breathe it—it’s the beating heart of our daily lives. The indifference we show towards the latest fashion or tech trends is no accident; it’s a conscious choice to prioritize our deepest passion. We see no point in upgrading our TVs when the one we have serves its purpose, nor can we rationalize the idea of a holiday when there’s so much joy to be found right here in our garages.

The thrill of tuning, the rush of adrenaline on the drive, the sheer happiness these machines bring us—albeit temporary—is incomparable. It’s this potent cocktail of emotions that keeps us hooked, constantly chasing the next automotive high. Our journey often begins innocently with basic mods like lowering springs and aftermarket shift knobs, but invariably, it escalates to a full-blown obsession involving engine swaps, turbo installations, and hunting down those elusive parts. The personal car isn’t just a mode of transportation for us; it’s a canvas for our self-expression and a testament to our technical prowess.

The core purpose of this article is to shed light on Ever’s decision to replace the just-installed 1zz with a K24a, right after assembling his MRS. The reason is clear: we’re all searching for excitement. The absence of track events has left us craving the rush of adrenaline, and this engine swap is exactly the kind of thrill we need to satiate our need for speed and performance.

What better way to get your endorphins going than VTEC! AMIRITE? As many would say, “Vtec is one helluva drug,” and I think that most of you who are reading this would agree. Sure, the 1zz was more than enough to have loads of fun on the track, but there is no denying that we all want more. More power, more money, more food, more, more, more. For most of us, we will never be happy with what we’ve got, so it’s always MORE! If you’re like Ever or myself, you will never be satisfied with what you have and will often find yourself asking… Why am I not happy with what I have? I know what I have is awesome, but for some reason, I still want more. For most of us, we are only doing it for ourselves. Not for clout, not for the followers, not for showing off, not for any reason other than just the feeling we get from motorsport.

After reading those you should be all the way caught up.

Ever’s final outing on the track with the MRS was in February 2020, just before global events took an unprecedented turn. Undeterred by the ensuing months of isolation, Ever transformed this period into an opportunity for automotive mastery. With unwavering determination, he has diligently upgraded the MRS, pouring his passion into each meticulous modification. His garage became a sanctuary where expertise met innovation — a space where he successfully installed track-spec Motorsports hood vents, originally designed for an E30, onto his vehicle with precision. Moreover, he crafted a robust front tow hook, showcasing his relentless pursuit of excellence and readiness for any challenge that the track might present next.

He widened the front fender to accommodate the 15×8 +5 offset wheels and made the front and rear bumpers “quick disconnect” by using Dzus fasteners.

Made some cooling upgrades by way of a Mishimoto radiator, Spal fan, Mishimoto radiator hoses, and a custom cooling duct to work with the hood vents he installed.

Anyone that is MRS savvy will notice he had to relocate his power steering to make way for the ducting.

Despite the completed busy work, the urge for more power lingered, compelling a deeper dive into the labyrinth of upgrades. Turbocharging was ruled out—too problematic. A supercharger promised significant gains, yet at an exorbitant cost. The thought of swapping in a 2zz engine for a mere 50 HP increase seemed inefficient, especially considering the expense.

Originally, when the 1zz was installed, cost-efficiency guided the decision against an LSD transmission, leading to the use of the existing, unsatisfactory gearbox. But what about coupling a C60 6-speed LSD from a Celica GTS with the current 1zz? Indeed, this option shone brightly as a beacon of potential. It was nearly chosen, for the performance benefits were tempting. However, the sticker shock of $2,000 to $2,500 for that LSD transmission couldn’t be justified, especially when it meant sticking with the same lackluster 1zz engine.

Honda has established itself as the epitome of reliability, power, and enjoyment on the road. Embracing the mantra “K swap the world,” enthusiasts recognize that a K swap is the definitive solution for automotive performance. The pinnacle of this passion lies in the JDM DC5 K20 engine, coupled with the sought-after Type R LSD transmission, an unmatched combination for the ultimate driving experience.

While it’s true that the JDM DC5 swap stands on the higher end of the spectrum, costing between $4,500-$6,500, its value surpasses mere numbers. The price reflects not just the engine, but a legacy of peak performance. And yes, the full swap isn’t just about the engine; it includes the essential clutch, conversion harness, swap axles, engine management, mounts, and a shifter, which may bring your total investment close to $10,000. However, for those who are serious about transforming their vehicle into a powerhouse, the investment is undeniably worthwhile.

By undertaking this swap, you’re not just upgrading your car—you’re aligning yourself with the best in terms of performance and driving pleasure.

The K24A, a gem within the JDM realm, stands out as an absolute powerhouse, especially considering its affordability. It’s a fact that minimal modifications can unlock this engine’s full potential, delivering robust, dependable power. However, to harness this beast, you must choose wisely; the K24s with the DOHC VTEC (three-lobe cams) RBB head — think the USDM TSX from ’04 to ’08 or the JDM Accord Euro R from ’03 to ’07 — represent the cream of the crop. Steer clear of the versions from the USDM CR-V or USDM Accord, as they lack the genuine DOHC VTEC system and, disappointingly, fall short in the power stakes.

After thorough research, it became crystal clear: a K24 swap was the perfect upgrade for his MRS. Undeterred by the global pandemic, he made a beeline for Hmotors and snagged a pristine JDM K24a—a steal at $900 cash, without question. With a handful of tweaks, this powerhouse is primed to churn out a staggering 200+ WHP, complemented by an astonishing torque of 180+ LB/FT. This torque isn’t just a number; it’s the secret sauce that transforms a leisurely drive into an adrenaline-pumping experience with just a touch of the throttle. Ever is not just hopeful—he’s certain that shedding the car’s weight under 2000 lbs, while boasting over 200 horsepower and 180 lb/ft of torque, will craft a ride that’s not just fun, but completely exhilarating.

Below you can see the K24 in all its glory, and the engine stand that Ever made for it to keep it mobile while building it. When its all done, the engine stand (orange part) can be unbolted and then the transmission can be mated to the engine and still be left mobile.

He also picked up a Type S transmission to go with it. No LSD for now, but later on down the road, we can learn something new by installing one into the transmission.

A must-do modification when doing a K24 swap is to change out the stock oil pump and convert to a K20 Type S style. AFHKparts.com has done all the hard work and put together a complete kit to retrofit this oil pump onto a K24.

Next up, essential for making this swap a success, is the mount kit. Ever chose not to use the innovative kit because it only mounts the engine at three points (two sides and one rear); the rear would mount to the subframe, and he read that under certain conditions the subframe would twist and distort. His mount kit of choice was “Mitch’s Auto Parts.” This kit enables you to use the factory Toyota mounts (which is good for Ever because he already had upgraded bushings in his), and the kit utilizes all four factory Toyota mounting locations.

Next up, you would normally need to run a CRV engine post mount to make a K24 swap fit in most vehicles. Ever has opted to just get the K-Tuned CRV-style bracket, which will also enable him to eliminate the A/C and power steering from the motor (since it’s an MRS, it already has electric power steering), and no one should have A/C in their race car.

When you buy the motor, usually you don’t get a flywheel with it, and you should always put a new clutch in when doing a swap.

And lastly some Insane shaft swap axles.

That’s as far as he’s gotten for now. COVID has made shipping things difficult, and some items are still out of stock. He is currently waiting for a Trac Tuff swirl pot and an oil pan baffle, and he will be switching out the stock K24 VTC cam gear for a 40-degree Drag Cartel one. As with all the builds we do on here, we will be doing step-by-step how-tos for every major step of the build. I’m super excited to see how fun this car is going to be when it’s completed.

The K24 engine is poised for a sharp increase in market value—believe me when I say it’s the tuning community’s best-kept secret. It’s only now, as more enthusiasts opt to swap in these engines, that the true potential of the K24 is coming to light.

Consider this: at a fraction of the cost of a B16 long block, you can get your hands on a more technologically advanced, newer engine with likely fewer miles. You have options galore for transmissions—splurge on a JDM Type R, opt for a more economical Non-LSD Type S, or save even more with an EP3 5-speed.

Sure, you’ll need mounts, axles, and wiring, but let’s be honest, those are a given in any engine swap project. It’s clear that the K24 swap is not only a smart choice financially but also a gateway to superior performance. Stay tuned; we’re just getting started.
