BMW Releases More 1 Series M Details

BMW’s treacle-slow reveal of its 1 Series M coupe continued this week as the company disclosed a few more details about the littlest M. The car will be powered by a version of the BMW’s 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline-six making 340 horsepower; if you can’t drive stick, don’t bother even checking it out, since the 1 Series M will only come with a six-speed manual. The whole car should weigh around 3300 pounds.
While the engine comes from the Z4 sDrive35is, the car takes after prior generations of the M3. “There are parallels between the power and weight of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and the BMW M3 E46,” said BMW M Head of Development Albert Biermann in an interview with M-Power.com. “On the performance side, though, it will be in its own league.” Biermann added the car would lap the Nürburgring about ten seconds quicker than the last-generation M3.
BMW said they’ll announce all the car’s details in mid-December, with a world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show next January; customers should start receiving their cars early next summer. Pricing hasn’t been finalized yet, but Biermann said the car’s MSRP will lie between those of the 135i and M3 coupe, skewing closer to the 1 Series. Since the 135i goes for $36,350 and the M3 costs $58,400, we imagine the 1 Series M will fall in the $44,000-$48,000 range. [via M-Power]source 0-60mag
