Last night, Ian and I went for some hard driving. Some might call it Touge, others might call it stupid, but I call it fun. Living in Las Vegas doesn’t offer many places to push your car through twists and turns. Coming from Southern California, I’m used to canyons like Mulholland, ACH, GMR, Big Bear, and Palos Verdes Drive. Out here, though, I’ve been hitting up the Lake Mead and Valley of Fire areas.
It’s a different vibe. Unlike SoCal’s tight canyons, where you can stay in second or third gear, the turns around Lake Mead aren’t as sharp, so you’ve got to go fast to feel the thrill. I’m usually in fourth or fifth in my Civic, hitting 80-110 mph before the JDM ECU’s governor kicks in. It’s gnarlier than it sounds—you really have to commit.
For the past year, I’ve had a GoPro but barely used it because I didn’t know how to edit the footage. Recently, though, GoPro released free editing software, so I decided to dust off the camera. Last night, I mounted it inside my car and recorded a couple of runs. Fair warning: the videos aren’t Hollywood quality. I’m new to editing, and these are my first attempts. The first video was 33 minutes raw, and I cut it down to 11. The second was 26 minutes, trimmed to six, with some music added. They’re rough, but I’m learning, and the software’s basic anyway.
